What a sand mound system actually is
A sand mound (sometimes called a raised-bed or mound system) is a septic system built above grade rather than buried below the soil surface. It uses a constructed bed of engineered sand placed on top of the ground instead of relying on native soil to treat wastewater.
Wastewater flows to a conventional septic tank first, where solids settle. The liquid effluent then moves to a dosing chamber, where a pump delivers timed doses to distribution pipes buried in the sand fill. The sand filters and treats the effluent as it percolates into the native soil below.

Why sites require a mound
Sand mounds are required when site conditions make a conventional gravity drain field impractical or prohibited by code. The common triggers:
- Shallow depth to groundwater. Many states require a minimum vertical separation (often 24 to 36 inches or more) between the bottom of the drain trench and the seasonal high water table. When the water table is too close to the surface, a mound raises the treatment zone above it.

System size. Most jurisdictions size the system to bedroom count, used as a proxy for daily wastewater flow. A five-bedroom home needs a much larger mound than a two-bedroom home.
Depth of required fill. The thinner the native soil, the taller the mound must be to achieve required separation from the water table or bedrock. More fill means more cost.

Pump inspection and service. The dosing pump and controls should be checked annually. Replacement, typically needed every 10 to 15 years, commonly runs $500 to $1,500 or more.
Alarm testing. A high-level alarm alerts you if the dosing tank is not pumping down correctly. Test it periodically and act on any alert promptly. Ignoring one can allow effluent to back up into the home.
Mound surface. Keep the mound clear of deep-rooted plants and trees. Grass is ideal. Shrubs and trees can damage distribution pipes and compromise the sand layer.

No sand mound can be legally installed without a permit from your county or local health department. The process typically involves a soil site evaluation, design review, an inspection during construction, and a final sign-off before the system is placed in service.
The permit process protects you: it verifies the system is sited correctly, sized for your home, and built to standard. Skipping it or hiring an unlicensed contractor is illegal in virtually every state and creates real liability if the system fails or when you sell. Always budget for permitting from the start.
