Septic Tank Pump Problems and How to Fix Them
Does your system actually have a pump?
Not every septic system does. A conventional gravity system, still the most common residential setup in the US, relies on slope to move effluent from the tank to the drain field. No pump is involved.
You have a pump if your system includes any of the following: a mound system, a pressure distribution system, a drip irrigation field, an aerobic treatment unit, or a separate pump chamber (sometimes called a wet well or dosing chamber). In those setups, a submersible effluent pump moves treated liquid uphill or across flat ground to the distribution system on a timed or float-controlled cycle. One system may even have two pumps.

The most common pump problems
The pump will not turn on
Start at the breaker box. Septic pumps run on a dedicated circuit, and a tripped breaker is one of the most common reasons a pump appears completely dead. Reset it once. If it trips again right away, stop there: repeated tripping points to a short in the wiring or a motor that has shorted out, and resetting it repeatedly is a fire risk.
If the breaker holds but the pump still does not respond, look at the control panel, typically mounted near the tank access or on an exterior wall. Most panels have indicator lights. A green “run” light that comes on without the pump actually moving water usually means a dead motor or a wiring break between the panel and the pump down in the chamber. A stuck float switch in the down position can also prevent the pump from ever receiving an “on” signal, even when water is high. Sometimes you can see the float position by looking down the access riser, but any wiring diagnosis or work inside the chamber belongs to a licensed professional.
The high-water alarm is going off
The alarm sounds when water in the pump chamber rises past a set threshold, which means the pump is not keeping up. Silence the alarm at the panel, but do not treat it as solved. The alarm is telling you something is wrong, not that you can ignore it until morning.
Common causes:
- Power outage. If power was out recently, water may have risen while the pump was down. Once power restores, the pump should draw the level back. Monitor it for an hour.
- Float switch stuck or failed. The “on” float may be tangled around the discharge pipe or the switch itself may have failed in the off position. A tech can check this quickly.
- Failed pump motor. The chamber fills because the pump is not moving water anywhere.
- Check valve failure. If the check valve on the discharge line fails open, water the pump sends upstream flows back into the wet well the moment the pump shuts off. The pump cycles, but the level never drops.
While you wait for a pro, cut back on house water use: no extra laundry loads, shorter showers, no running the dishwasher. Every gallon entering the system during an alarm makes the situation worse.
The pump runs but the water level will not drop
This one often points to a clogged impeller. Grease, hair, and fine debris accumulate on the impeller blades over years of operation. The motor runs and you can hear it, but it cannot move enough water to outpace incoming flow. A technician will pull the pump, clean or replace the impeller, and check whether the motor is still within spec.
The other frequent culprit is a failed check valve. If the valve that prevents effluent from draining back into the wet well fails open, the pump pushes water forward on each cycle and it flows right back the moment the pump shuts off. The water level hovers without improving.
A pump nearing end of life can also produce this symptom even with a clean impeller: a worn motor can no longer generate enough pressure to push effluent up to the distribution system. The pump works, but only barely.
The pump runs constantly or cycles too often
A normally functioning effluent pump runs in short, controlled cycles controlled by a timer or float switches. If it is running almost continuously, the most common explanations are a float switch stuck in the “on” position, an unusually high household water load (a running toilet, a burst supply line, or heavy back-to-back laundry), or a failed timer relay in the control panel.
Constant running burns out motors faster than normal cycling, so even if the system appears to be functioning, this is worth a service call. It rarely resolves on its own.
Noisy operation or humming without flow
A pump that hums but moves no water is often dry-running or has a severely clogged intake screen. Running without water destroys the motor seals in short order. Shut off the pump circuit and call a pro. The longer it runs dry, the more certain a full replacement becomes.
Grinding or rattling during operation usually indicates a damaged impeller or debris stuck in the pump housing.
Tripped breaker or burning smell
Both signal electrical failure or motor overheating. Do not reset the breaker repeatedly. Switch off the pump circuit at the panel and call a licensed electrician or septic technician. Reduce water use in the house until the pump is repaired to slow how fast the chamber fills.
What you can safely check yourself
Most homeowners can handle this short list without risk:
- Reset the circuit breaker once.
- Silence the alarm and note the time and conditions when it went off.
- Read the indicator lights on the control panel.
- Look down the access riser for a visibly tangled or submerged float.
- Rule out a power outage as the cause.
That is roughly the limit of safe DIY troubleshooting on a septic pump. The interior of a pump chamber can contain hydrogen sulfide gas at concentrations that are lethal within seconds. OSHA classifies confined spaces that may contain H2S as permit-required confined spaces, and state and county health regulations typically prohibit homeowner entry without proper gas-detection equipment and a trained attendant outside. No inspection, no matter how quick it seems, is worth entering that space unequipped.
Repair or replace?
Most submersible effluent pumps last somewhere between 7 and 15 years under normal conditions. Quality, duty cycle, and what enters the system all affect that range. A pump that has solids reaching it because the tank is overdue for pumping will fail sooner.
The general decision rule: if the pump is under 7 years old and the problem is a failed float switch or check valve, repair makes sense. If the motor itself has failed and the pump is older than 8 or 10 years, put that repair money toward a new unit instead. A motor replacement on an aging pump often costs nearly as much as a new pump installed, and the other components are aging alongside it.
Ask the technician for a written repair estimate alongside a replacement quote before authorizing work. How long does a septic pump typically last? A quality submersible effluent pump in a properly maintained system commonly runs 7 to 15 years. Heavy water use, grease or solids bypassing the tank and reaching the pump, and frequent power fluctuations all shorten the lifespan. Keeping the tank pumped on schedule reduces solids accumulation and extends pump life.
Does a failing pump always trigger the alarm? Not always. A pump that is cycling too often, moving less water than it should, or running with a damaged impeller may not trigger the alarm right away. Those slower failure modes show up as sluggish drain field performance or a gradual rise in wet well water level over days. The alarm is a late signal, not an early warning. If you notice the pump running more frequently than usual, that is worth a call to a septic professional before the alarm sounds.
